The Growth of Galaxies

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Project Description

How did galaxies, like the Milky Way that we reside within, grow over the eons? Did
new stars form within galaxies or do large galaxies acquire stars by merging with
smaller galaxies? We will answer this, using new surveys of the distant Universe
obtained with large telescopes and satellites. We will determine how galaxies have grown, by measuring their masses and determining how they populate clouds of dark matter. During the proposed visit, Dr Michael Brown will work closely with leading theoretical and observational astrophysicists, and the resulting science will lead to significant publications in major journals.
