The effect of digital transformation on compensable billings recovery

Project: Research

Project Details

Project Description

Background: Recovery of compensable billings from Transport Accident Commission, Workcover, and Overseas Visitor Agreement patients is known to be inefficient1. Various strategies to improve billing accuracy in the American context have been described in the Emergency Department2-7. This study aims to examine the effect of an Australian health service’s digital transformation on the 14th October 2019 on its Emergency Department compensable billings accuracy.

Design: A retrospective observational before and after cohort study. Compensable patients presenting from 13th Sep – 13th Oct and 15th Oct – 15th Nov will be described. Two-tailed t tests and chi-squared tests will be used to compare groups for baseline characteristics and assess for potential confounders. Billings identified and billings missed will be calculated for both groups. The t-test for independent samples will be calculated to assess for statistically significant differences.

Funding: Nil funding. The work will be performed in the Chief Investigator's own time.
