This project will examine, for the first time, the distribution of clandestine literature in England between 1695 and 1774 in a series of detailed high-point studies. Innovative and extensive research, concerning such important subjects as the participation of women in the composition, publication and distribution of erotic literature, the relationship between literary, political and religious erotica, and the legal and moral response to the rapid growth of this contentious dimension of the book trade, will be placed in context by a broad bibliographical survey. This investigation will be solidly based on examination of printed and manuscript material and will use the latest computer-based resources.
