Project Description
While many education professionals around the world recognize the importance of involving parents in the education of their children, many struggle to obtain high rates of parent engagement. While numerous barriers exist in establishing high parental engagement, existing research highlights the value of honoring the family’s culture when seeking to improve parent involvement. Increasingly, research highlights the importance of promoting culturally responsive schools to achieve a variety of educational goals. Thus, understanding parents’ perspectives of cultural congruity between their family and the school may provide us with further information and understanding to facilitate further parent engagement and support for all families.
Current measures exist to evaluate cultural congruity among college students, which universities use to evaluate the experiences of minority students and improve educational outcomes. However, in our review of the extant literature, we have been unable to identify a measure to evaluate cultural congruity among families with students ages 7-18 (roughly, elementary school to high school in the US). IF there are such measures of cultural congruity for schools and students (ages 7-18 years) / families, we hope that you will send us the relevant citations, articles, or copies of the measure(s).
To understand parents’ perspectives of schools’ cultural responsiveness, we endeavor to collaborate to develop a measure of cultural congruity that can be used internationally. This measure will aim to understand parents’ experiences with the schools’ demographics, communication, academics, and values. By collaborating with international colleagues, we seek to establish a multicultural measure to capture parents’ experiences to help schools be more culturally responsive to diverse families.
