Project Description
Successful meiotic divisions in the oocyte are a fundamental step in the life cycle of most organisms. In mammals, progress through the meiotic divisions is an essential process for the oocyte to be able to undergo fertilization and form a healthy embryo. Understanding how this process is controlled will yield fundamental and practical knowledge that will improve understanding of how the quality of the egg leads to a healthy fertile embryo in women, endangered species and also in animals of important commercial value. Furthermore, we will aim to discover new aspects about how cell division that will impact on understanding the mechanisms underpinning development of all organisms.
