Project: Research

Project Details

Project Description

In support of the Victorian Department of Education (DE)’s Best Start, Best Life (BSBL) reform, Monash Faculty of Education has been engaged by DE to design, develop, and deliver a multi-package professional learning program that builds knowledge and skills around team teaching, including collaboration, planning and pedagogical leadership practices in funded kindergarten programs.

Team teaching practices aim to enhance the quality of kindergarten programs by enriching the planning cycle with multiple perspectives. Cooperation between teachers and educators allows for reflective discussion on children’s learning, planning effectively to enhance learning, and building relationships with other professionals and families to deliver high-quality programs. Implementing team teaching has the potential to significantly benefit workforce retention and job satisfaction through workload sharing, reducing isolation, and increasing working arrangements.

The program will increase knowledge and capability of EC educators and teachers in:
• developing team teaching across full-day program delivery
• developing innovative approaches to working collaboratively
• maximising collaborative reflective practice
• developing a whole service practice approach.

The program will be designed and delivered through two packages:
• Package 1 will be an online professional learning package, available on demand for the whole Victorian EC sector. The modules will introduce, and be supported by, key evidence and contemporary research, where there are clear links between EC professionals’ practice changes and children’s learning and development outcomes.
• Package 2 will be an intensive, tailored support package that involves in-service coaching for identified services that require additional support to develop and embed collaborative team practices and culture. These include the rollout of the development programs with quantitative and qualitative research methods utilised to monitor the program’s performance.

The Monash team has extensive expertise in the design and delivery of high-quality professional development, and will utilise both quantitative and qualitative early childhood education research to provide impactful evidence of the professional learning program, and a deep understanding of the sector internationally, nationally, and in Victoria.

The Monash Team will measure the changes and evidence of success using comprehensive research methods including data collection and analyses. A series of surveys, individual and/or group interviews, interactive asynchronous activities, and reflective practice sessions will be integrated into the Packages.

The contract will be for up to four years, between June 2024 - December 2027.
