Women-in-Fire Prescribed Fire Training Exchange (WTREX) is a global training program that brings women together to improve firefighting skills. Held in the United States in 2022, an Australian
12-day intensive is being held in Far North Queensland in May 2025, with a specific focus on highlighting the role of Indigenous women in fire management. AUS-WTREX is being delivered by the Queensland Fire Department in partnership with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, with support from AFAC. National Indigenous Disaster Resilience Researchers are conducting an independent evaluation to understand how participation in the AUS-WTREX program impacts Indigenous women’s physical, emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing.
This research was proposed by the Queensland Fire Department and is funded by Natural Hazards Research Australia
