Project Description

Cell damage associated with cardiovascular disease, ischemia/trauma and inflammation is often mediated by free-radicals and other reactive oxygen species. Inhibition of free-radical induced tissue damage by antioxidants is a promising approach to the treatment of these conditions. Although antioxidants have potent protective properties, they alone will be insufficient to treat the conditions described above. The key goal of this project is to develop new therapeutic agents that have enhanced activity through inclusion of the potent antioxidant potential of selenium. Applications include the treatment of diseases associated with an ageing population and ischemic heart disease.
