Structural basis of GAD65-mediated autoimmunity in Type 1 Diabetes

Project: Research

Project Description

This project aims to characterise the interaction between the Type 1 Diabetes autoantigen GAD65 and
autoantibodies. Although more than 80% of patients with diabetes develop antibodies against this
neuroendocrine enzyme, details of this interaction remain unknown. We will use a combination of structural
biology and protein engineering techniques to study GAD65-antibody interactions in molecular detail. This
will reveal key insights into the chemical and structural nature of autoepitopes and will provide fundamental
knowledge of the structural determinants of autoantigenicity.
