Stresses in Si particles in an Al-7Si-xMg Alloy during plastic straining

In situ measurements will be made of the stresses in the Si particles as the alloy is loaded in the mechanical test machine at the ENGIN-X beamline of the ISIS neutron facility. Tests will be interrupted at progressively higher loads and a diffraction pattern collected at each load. Powder measurements from alloy samples and Si standard will enable the thermal misfit strains (and hence stresses) to be determined. The results will be compared with those determined from current theoretical models.
