Project Description

Strengthening Democracy: analysing Australia's public discourse of democracy at scale

The Scanlon Institute (SI) have asked SoDa Labs to support them with their research inquiries into public discourse around “democracy in Australia” in recent years.
Specifically they have asked for help with the following three questions:
Q1.What are the differences and similarities in public discourses about democracy in the media and in parliamentary debates?
Q2.How have public discourses about democracy in the media and in parliamentary debates in Australia evolved over time?
a. How do national events shape public discourses about democracy?
b. To what extent may international events shape public discourses about democracy?
Q3.How do discourses about democracy tend to be framed? What other issues or subject matters tend to be discussed alongside democracy?
In addition, SI have indicated that they do not desire reports or figures as such, but rather, they would like to receive datasets in a useful format for in-house analysis and visualisation. Monash SoDA Labs will gather outputs and findings in the form of readable datasets, with explanatory notes, and codes where applicable,

Finally, SI have requested technical advisory support from the Lab as required to make the most use of the datasets provided, and to uplift their own technical capabilities.
