The scheduling of matches between 300 teams in 30 divisions across the South-East of Melbourne is very hard to do by hand. In particular ensuring each club each week has a balance of home and away matches has proven to be very problematic. SMJFL previously contracted the development of software to automate the task, but the results were unsuccessful. The service provided by Monash is to automate key parts of the scheduling process so that SMJFL schedulers could interact with the system. The research requirement is to develop an algorithm to allocate all the teams in each club in each division to a place in a fixed schedule for that division that ensures the required weekly home and away balance.
