Project Description
Speechless, an experimental opera in five short acts for the Australian Bass Orchestra, community choir and four vocal soloists is a 70-minute homage to persons rendered speechless through political means. In Adelaide in July 2017, after three years in development, Australian composer Cat Hope and Perth-based Tura New Music held the first stage workshop of Speechless with a team of 70 people. The workshop and viewings were funded by the Australia Council and other partners to develop the graphic orchestral and vocal score, with only a hint of what full staging might reveal.
We seek further funding from the Australia Council to research the final developmental stage of the work, to take it to full production for a proposed Perth premiere at the Perth Festival in February 2019.
