Project Description

This project traces the stories of people smuggling in Australia’s migrant history, through both first and second-hand narratives. People smuggling has a history in Australian migration that stretches well beyond the maritime borders of our nation and has a longer lineage than the recent refugee movements of the twenty first century. Jews who escaped the Holocaust, people fleeing communist
Europe, Vietnamese “boat people” escaping civil war, and, most recently, people from countries in Africa and the Middle East running from famine and violence, many who made Australia home have had to use middlemen at some stage in their journeys.
