No standard protocol or program exists for the provision of smoking cessation support to in-patients across Victorian public hospitals. The chances of patients giving up smoking in the longer-term are minimal in the absence of follow-up after hospital discharge, resulting in waste of resources and lost opportunities. The proposed project, a multidisciplinary team effort driven by trained hospital pharmacists, will develop, implement and evaluate a smoking cessation intervention (GIVE UP FOR GOOD) for in-patients with community follow-up. This project is supported by three major Victorian public hospitals. GIVE UP FOR GOOD could reduce mortality, morbidity and healthcare costs and could be implemented widely across Australia, if successful.
