Project Description

The seismology of the Sun and magnetic stars relies on us understanding how seismic waves interact with
strong surface magnetic fields. We know that these fields can split incident waves into three types, and also
change their phase, thereby obscuring the image from the interior. Detailed modelling of this process is
required in order to shatter this "acoustic showerglass". This project will develop a sophisticated and efficient
Generalized Ray Theory code, SunRay, capable of exploring a range of models of magnetic active regions
and sun(star)spots. This will be used to both constrain spot models, and to improve existing seismic inversion
methods, with substantial implications for our understanding of magnetic activity as it affects Earth.
