Reducing the Use of Psychotropic Medications for Behaviour Support: A Comprehensive Review of Support Needs

The purpose of this project is to promote a multidisciplinary approach to reduce inappropriate psychotropic use, supported by education/upskilling of the relevant workforce. Developing workforce capacity involves the upskilling of general practitioner and disability support workers through targeted education. At the same time, the project seeks to develop a multidisciplinary practice model whereby the pharmacist, general practitioner and Behaviour Support Practitioner can collaborate effectively to identify inappropriate use of psychotropic medications through the process of Home Medications Reviews. By sharing and interpreting key health issues, this multidisciplinary care team will better collaborate in the development of high quality fade out plans that contain detailed medication reduction schedules as well as corresponding response strategies.
