Project Description

Biblical studies still lacks a proper theory of the way the Bible relates to its different environments. Taking the specific example of Genesis-Joshua, I argue that this material is a political myth and that the combination of psychoanalysis, feminism and Marxism provides a helpful method for analysing this material. Further, I assess the role of Israel in the notion of the Australian nation-state, and explore the possibility of positive political myths today. Through a major book, twelve articles and a radio program, the results will be communicated not only to the discipline itself but also to a wider interested audience.
