Project Description

National Health and Medical Research Council, $94,250.00.

Physical activity is an important predictor of health outcomes in the general population, however data relating physical activity to clinical outcomes in adults with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) are limited. This thesis sought to investigate patterns of physical activity participation undertaken by adults with CF, the relationship between levels of physical activity and clinical outcomes, as well as to identify effective activity promotion strategies. These aims were addressed in the six studies presented in this thesis. These studies were:
1-A validation study which showed that a physical activity monitor (SenseWear Pro 3 armband) provides a valid assessment of cumulative free-living activity intensity and energy expenditure in adults with CF, compared to indirect calorimetry.
2-A prospective, multi-centre, longitudinal study which found that lower physical activity participation was associated with poorer clinical outcomes over 12-months. Additionally, hospitalisation for respiratory exacerbation resulted in reduced physical activity at one month post discharge, and females undertook significantly less activity than males.
3-A Cochrane review which showed limited evidence for the effectiveness of home exercise programmes and exercise counselling to improve physical activity participation. No activity promotion approaches, other than exercise training, had been investigated in people with CF.
4-A systematic review which demonstrated that telehealth in CF was feasible and acceptable to patients.
5-A crossover trial which showed that remote tele-monitoring provided accurate assessment of exercise tolerance compared to in-person monitoring.
6-A pilot study which showed that an internet-based physical activity monitoring programme was well accepted by adults with CF, and was a potentially useful tool to encourage activity participation immediately following hospitalisation.
These studies indicated that physical activity participation was related to health outcomes in adults with CF and provide important information to guide future interventional trials in this area.
