Project Description

This project will examine Australian mygalomorph spider venoms. The main focus of the project will be the pharmacological characterisation of the venoms, and the isolation and characterisation of the active toxins. Venom and toxin activity will be tested by standard assays (i.e. skeletal muscle and insect toxicity assays). Other methods including high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), MALDI-TOF mass-spectrometry and patch-clamp will be utilised to characterise the toxins. A special focus will include an examination of the variation in the venom properties caused by factors such as collection-site, size and sex. These venoms represent a greatly underutilised source of novel toxins.
