    Project Description

This project aims at developing, for the first time, a unified video coding system, which will not only allow devices with limited battery power and processing capacity, such as mobile phones and PDAs, to encode live video data in real-time but also achieve significant improvement in coding efficiency so that the encoded streams could be transmitted cost-effectively at a much lower bit rate. It also aims at improving the error resilience of the encoded streams so that acceptable image quality can be retained under noisy wireless transmissions. It will enable distributed sensor networks of inexpensive devices gathering multimedia rich information, an emerging trend in remote surveillance, smart home design, and medical patient monitoring.
