Project Description

In the 21st century, climate change stands out as the most significant global threat, ushering in a surge in temperatures worldwide (Wallace-Wells, 2018). This study responds urgently to the pervasive challenge posed by heatwaves, focusing specifically on the Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector in Bangladesh.
Its primary objective is to determine the optimal temperature range in factory settings equipped with structural cooling mechanisms to enhance worker productivity, health, and well-being. Moreover, it investigates the varying impacts of temperature on men and women in the workplace, emphasizing the importance of gender-sensitive environmental considerations.
This pilot study, encompassing a sample of 2,100 workers, serves as a pivotal
precursor to a large-scale intervention slated to target 12,000 RMG factory workers in Dhaka, Bangladesh. A randomized controlled trial will be conducted in collaboration with the Global Development Research Institute (GDRI), a local NGO, and Norp Knit Industries Ltd., wherein temperatures (ranging from 22ºC to 28ºC) will be manipulated using evaporative cooling fans.
