Project Description

If rigid bodies are linked together with specified changes of angle between them, and submerged in water, they mimic the motion of fish. This project will be concerned with the numerical simulation of this motion under conditions than have not been considered before. These conditions will include a variety of rigid body shapes, allowance for boundaries such as free surfaces, and the effect of covering the bodies with elastic skins. The simulation algorithms will allow us to model the swimming of fish with unprecedented accuracy, and they will also allow us to predict the dynamics of robotic undersea vehicles.
