Project Description

A series of novel surface coatings will be prepared from natural oils e.g. Canola oil using new metathesis chemistry. The chemistry represents a major advance on current state of the art technology and promises to deliver high performance anti-corrosive primers and light-stable, fast drying paints. Natural oils, in particular canola oil, are available in commercial quantities in Australia. This chemistry offers the possibility of converting these oils, which are currently not useful for the preparation of surface coatings, into higher-value materials.
