‘Mobile Indonesians’ is a multi-sited ethnographic study of the role of mobile telephony in cultural change. The research team will create detailed qualitative maps of the changing social networks and communication behaviours of metropolitan, urban and rural users. This innovative research method will allow us to understand the complexity of mobile telephony’s impact on rapidly evolving digital literacies and social differentiation. This project will deliver the first book dedicated to a detailed discussion of how mobile telephony is shaping the attitudes and behaviours of tomorrow’s Indonesians. Our findings will advance scholarship by integrating the disciplines of area and cultural/media studies.
