Mary Astell (1666-1731): An Historical-Intellectual Role Model for Women in Philosophy

Project: Research

Project Details

Project Description

There are very few well-known female figures in the history of philosophy. With this project, I aim to establish a lasting reputation for Mary Astell as an impressive woman philosopher of the early modern period. I propose to write the first systematic account of her philofophy, to publish the first modern edition of her largest work, and to organise a conference in which philosophers discuss the contemporary relevance of her ideas. In this way, I intend to provide a much-needed role model for women in philosophy and in academia more generally.
