Project Description

Under the Government’s Towards Zero 2016//2020 Road Safety Strategy & Action Plan, VicRoads was tasked with ‘Investigating ways to manage the level of distraction and other human factor issues associated with current and emerging in-vehicle technologies’. In early 2017, the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB) was engaged to undertake this project. This involved developing a draft criterion (distraction safety rating) for assessing safe human factors/ergonomics design, including test methods for assessing and rating the vehicle Human Machine Interface (HMI) against these criteria.

The aim of conducting this project is to bring the HMI Distraction Guidelines as near to completion as possible, to allow VicRoads to have a finalised deliverable for this Towards Zero project. A further aim of this work is to have Guidelines with checklists that are sufficiently developed to be used to assess in-vehicle HMI (in the context of distraction).
