Project Description
The number of transgender children, adolescent and young adults seeking gender-affirming medical care has increased exponentially in recent years, but empirical evidence on the long-term benefits, risks and overall outcomes following gender affirming care is limited. Consequently, clinical guidelines for gender affirming care of young people are based primarily on expert consensus and many important questions remain. In 2022, the Australian Research Consortium for Transgender Youth and Children (ARCTYC) was launched with the goal of addressing these questions.
For this project, >60 researchers, clinicians and consumers from ARCTYC will come together to conduct interdisciplinary research that develops, implements and evaluates the effectiveness and acceptability of different models of physical and mental health care for transgender children and young people including those with intersectional disadvantages. Central to these efforts is the involvement of those with lived experience, who are included both as chief investigators and associate investigators. To ensure the voice of transgender young people is represented, ARCTYC's Youth and Family Committee has also played a key role in shaping the project's proposed research agenda, which is divided across the following 4 Themes: Theme 1 will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of hormonal interventions by harmonising three existing clinical registries of trans young people, making it the largest dataset worldwide; Theme 2 will collect new data to address questions related to the longer-term consequences of hormonal
interventions on neurocognition, health and well-being; Theme 3 will develop and evaluate novel non-hormonal interventions that target key drivers of poor health in trans young people; and Theme 4 will compare different models of service provision.
By establishing a stronger evidence base, this project will transform health care for trans young people, and ultimately improve their mental and physical health.
