Increasing workforce retention is a significant challenge facing hospitals, with chronic labour shortages in the medical, nursing and allied health workforce. Implementing high-performance human resource management (HPHRM) practices can increase workforce retention. Using survey and case-study data, we aim to examine: a) to what extent are Australian hospitals adopting HPHRM practices? b) Is there an associate between the type of human resource management (HRM) practices and workforce retention? c) How and why does the type of HRM affect workforce retention? Our outcomes will include recommendations to improve hospitals' HRM practices, which should increase workforce retention.
