Historicising Orientalism: The French, The Jews, and the Modern World

Project: Research

Project Details

Project Description

This project seeks to recover, historicise and understand the numerous accounts French travellers, artists and bureaucrats in the Orient in the nineteenth century created of Jews. These accounts have been left out of studies of what we have come to know as Orientalism. In so doing, it will provide a clear picture of the place Jews in the Orient occupied in French negotiations of modernity. It will challenge the straightforward East/West dichotomy that has dominated the field of research concerning Orientalism. The outcome will be a rich historical study of the making of France and Frenchness in the nineteenth century, and a refreshingly new interpretation of Orientalism.
