    Project Description

The aim of this proposal is to fund a major hardware upgrade to the exisiting Victorian High Performance Computing Facility located at RMIT University to grow and enhance the current resources already provided to various research across a range of disciplines at VPAC'S Member and collaborating Institutions. The current facility supports six member institutions; La Trobe University; Monash University; RMIT University; SWinburne University of Technology; The University of Ballarat and The University of Melbourne. The facility also supports Industry and various research grouns in faciliating high performance computing. This proposal seeks to increase the current computational power by double the current capacity. Sustainable economic growth in this area required compute power, this facility will allow research groups to either maintain or gain higher international leading edge status in high performance computing. This facility services the needs of approximately 130 research staff and 90students involved in collaboration between dozens of major research groups. The aim of the High Performance Computing Facility is to operate a world class facility as measured by both computational power and client satisfaction. This proposal seeks to increase the current computational power of the existing Victorian High Performance Computing Facility by doubling the current capacity. The combination of a large number of very fast processors and a very fast interconnect makes this facility ideal for modelling and solving science and engineering problems beyond the scope of installed HPC systems. The facility will be linked to other HPC systems in Victoria and across Australia to create an evolving cluster computing "meta-centre" that links computing resources together. The upgraded facility will enhance the increasing demand of reasearch collaboration activities between member institutions and other research organisations.
