The synthesis of heterobimetallic complexes containing both rare earth and transition metals will be achieved by the use of appropriate bridging ligands. Heterobimetallic coordination complexes have a wide range of potential 'downstream' applications, ranging from magnetic materials to homogeneous catalysts. Complexes displaying single molecule magnet behaviour are of particular interest due to the ability of each individual molecule to act as a nanoscale magnet. The combination of rare earth and transition metal ions utilising dicyanamide and pyrazolate ligands will generate extended networks with long range magnetic properties and higher critical temperatures than in related complexes containing only transition metals.
