The aim of the project is to acquire and share knowledge about how health targets for microbial water quality are set and about how necessary data for deriving water quality guidelines are best collected and reported. Researchers in the Netherlands are at the forefront of the process of determining the burden of gastrointestinal disease and the use of a mathematical modelling for setting water quality guidelines. Liaison with them will allow for the refinement of Australian water quality guidelines, though verification of heath targets for Australian conditions and improvements in reporting and collection of Australian water quality and exposure data.
