Project Description
'Gorge photograph: Drawings for Rex Battarbee, 13 September 1939' begins with the significance of the Victorian watercolorist Rex Battarbee, his relationship with the Arrernte artist Albert Namatjira, and the critical (and largely overlooked) importance of photography in their exchanges. The project attempts to unfold the vital importance of these histories in thinking, and imagining within, our present.
'Gorge photograph' encompasses two parts: a body of large-scale drawings and an off-set printed artist's book, undertaken individually; and a parallel process of engagement with contemporary 'Hermannsburg School' artists at Ngurratjuta/Iltja Ntjarra Many Hands Art Centre in Alice Springs. The two parts of the project will be exhibited alongside one another at the AGSA, and Milani Gallery.
