Background to the project
The Gippsland Language and Song Project (GLASP) engages youth in learning local First Languages through music in the southeast of Australia. With the endorsement of Traditional Custodians from the Gippsland Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC) and in partnership with Indigenous Elders and educators, this project aims to foster students’ and teachers’ confidence and interest in learning the Aboriginal languages of the East Gippsland region through music. This region of Australia has a relatively high population of Aboriginal (Koorie) people which reinforces the urgency to promote knowledge and confidence in First Language usage. The local languages of this area are in different stages of reclamation and revival, with increasing demands on qualified language workers and diminishing Elders with language knowledge. Therefore, the aims of are GLASP are to:
1)Contribute to the maintenance and growth of First Language usage in the Gippsland region through music; and
2)Foster reconciliation between Koorie and non-Koorie students through the celebration of local First Languages and shared music making
GLASP enacts these main aims through its objectives to:
•Inspire students’, staff and families’ motivation to learn more about First Languages
•Encourage schools’ increased inclusion of Indigenous language and culture in the curriculum
•Produce quality music resources in First Language and for dissemination across the region
•Improve educators’ capacities to integrate Indigenous perspectives through culturally responsive curriculum
•Engage educators in meaningful self-reflection for professional development in Indigenous education
