Project Description
This project seeks to understand the social and cultural impact of the Italian Wars, a series of conflicts fought out between 1494 and 1559 mainly on the Italian peninsula, which reshaped the political map of early modern
Europe. It will generate new knowledge about the involvement of women in the promulgation and resolution of the Wars and throw light on the gendered performance of power in a variety of European political contexts. The
project will deliver significant benefits by showing that interpretations of gender in the early modern past were not static, but rather changed in response to political and social exigencies, a theme that continues to be relevant in
contemporary Australian society.
