Project Description

Declining numbers of girls (and boys) studying sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) compound escalating shortages in the pipeline of specialist skills for STEM occupations. Losses in interest, value, and own perceived abilities during secondary school predict choices away from STEM; more so for girls and women. Complementary longitudinal studies from Australia in collaboration with leading international scholars would discover why motivations decline especially for girls/women, how this predicts different STEM career choices and actual occupational outcomes, to yield theoretical developments and inform policy to improve the participation of girls/women (and boys/men).
