Foreign Banks in Australia: What difference have they made?

The intention of the research funded by this report will be to integrate theoretical propositions and empirical regularities generated by the academic research with the current state of play with respect to foreign banks in Australia as drawn from recent publicly available data sources. This will have the benefit of providing a structured background to ‘big picture’ issues more expeditiously than is possible via a time-intensive rigorous academic econometric analysis. By comparing the Australian foreign bank experience with several alternative benchmark nations some additional insights may be drawn that are not possible from a single nation perspective. The intent is use this integrative approach to generate some conclusions and conjectural forecasts that will inform both regulatory policy and industry practice.
