Project Description
The project aims to assess the implications of Asia’s rise for Australia’s financial services sector, as well as for the underlying payments, trade and capital flows that enable the smooth functioning of economic activity.
ACFS is currently initiating a long-term project that will assess the implications of Asia’s rise for Australia’s financial services sector, as well as for the underlying payments, trade and capital flows that enable the smooth functioning of economic activity. This project is called Integration in the Asia Pacific: The Future of Australian Financial Services (hereafter “Integration in the Asia Pacific”). Unlike other projects or regulatory studies that have examined aspects of the regulatory framework in Australia and various Asian economies that impact on competitiveness, stability or flow of funds, the Integration in the Asia Pacific project will analyse the prospects for deeper financial integration of financial services and financial markets, and assess what this could mean for the financial ecosystem of the Asian region and for Australia. ACFS has already completed an exposition paper that sets forth the case for undertaking this research and canvasses potential areas for further investigation. ACFS proposes that the project will provide an evidence base to better understand the interactions of the system as a whole, as well as the potential impact of adjusting specific policies that either enable or restrict the potential for deeper integration.
