Exploring the Gendered Experience of Climate Change and Transitional Justice Mechanisms in Contemporary Indonesia

The proposed research project is a scoping exercise which brings together world-leading expertise in Monash and Warwick in the fields of gender, climate change, human rights postcolonialism, public policy and law. By means of a workshop at the start and a reflection and future directions day at the end, it aims to create new lines of inter- and cross-disciplinary analysis on the ongoing effects of colonialism in Indonesia. Specifically, it will seek to examine the extent to which 1) patriarchal structures of coloniality can be associated with present violations of fundamental human rights in the context of climate change; 2) the gendered experience of climate change is conditioned by patriarchal Western structures of coloniality; and 3) whether transitional justice mechanisms provide scope for addressing structural injustices. It further aims to build upon Monash’s existing presence in Jakarta, Indonesia, to extend spaces for the wider inclusion of Global South scholarship. The scoping exercise and subsequent research will serve to establish links between Warwick and Monash researchers and to identify how this partnership can be leveraged to construct bids for research funding.
