Project Description

In 1788, more than 250 Indigenous languages were spoken across Australia by millions of people. Today, only around 10 are still spoken by children. Although the demand to learn these languages at school is increasing, the supply of high-quality teaching materials can’t keep up. To support Indigenous language reawakening, we conduct interdisciplinary research involving Indigenous Language and Educational Technology. Our idea is to Co-creating Educational Knowledge Graphs for Endangered Indigenous Languages. Coupled with downstream machine learning algorithms, the knowledge graph can yield accurate representations of Indigenous knowledge alongside the language as teaching materials, thereby empowering educators to teach a deep well of environmental and social knowledge encoded in the language, keeping the language alive among the young generation and beyond.
