    Project Description

Reducing industrial gas use in Australia requires the rapid deployment of electrification, including some mature technologies. Multiple pilot-scale projects are underway, but industry faces barriers to large-scale deployment including technology supply constraints and lack of confidence in the future availability of low-cost renewable electricity.

This 12-month project will take a cluster approach to reducing gas use in the Kwinana and Gladstone industrial regions. We will undertake research and outline opportunities for electrified plant and energy infrastructure to be deployed in Australia’s regions.

We will identify and work with investment alliances to equip them to procure plant and maintenance contracts. We will pursue policy and market changes to enable rapid deployment of renewable electricity, ensuring industry is vocal in its support for and adoption of electrification so that large-scale grid augmentation gets underway quickly.

Climateworks and Beyond Zero Emissions are uniquely positioned to tackle this issue and have complementary strengths. Climateworks will leverage strong relationships with large industrial gas users, the financial sector, and federal and state governments from previous work and ongoing work in Gladstone. Beyond Zero Emissions will leverage relationships with ARENA, CEFC and industry players in Gladstone and Kwinana to identify projects, procurement and partnerships supporting rapid electrification.
