Project Details

Project Description

This project will reult in the first conceptual history of autoimmunity, the reaction of the immune system against one of the body's own constituents. Since the 1940s, a multitude of puzzling conditions, including thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthiritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis, juviline-onset diabetes meelitus, have resolved into autoimmune diseases. This research draws together scientific research, clinical practice, institutional structure, and patient experience. It places ideas about immunological recognition of self (and its failures) in proper clinical and institutional context. Specific autoimmune diseases will lead the historical narrative. The goal is a 'collective biography' of the autoimmune diseases.
