Work from my laboratory pioneered the notion that skeletal muscle, like many other organs, has the capacity to release proteins (myokines) in an endocrine-like manner. Since there are extensive perceived benefits to exercise, it is tangible that numerous proteins are released from active muscle. The aim of the current project is to identify novel and biologically relevant myokines through the innovative use of proteomic screening. It is expected the project will identify numerous novel proteins that may enhance our understanding of human biology. Such identification of novel myokines is most significant for the health and well being of Australians.
