Project Description
In recent years art history has focussed on the active contributions that materials often make to the creative process. No longer conceived solely as passive and inert, they are seen to have an agency of their own. The German painter, film-maker and photographer Sigmar Polke (1941-2010) adopted this view early in his career when he began to work with unstable substances, whose behaviour he only partially controlled. A recent wave of scholarship examining material agency has yet to consider Polke’s work, an oversight my project will correct.
