Cooperative housing model for ‘middle income’ households

Project: Research

Project Details

Project Description

Over the last three years, the Middle Ground model (formerly Third Way model) has been conceptualised: a scalable, cooperative housing model that provides high-quality, sustainable, long-term, rent-stabilised housing for Australians locked out of homeownership, without the need for government subsidy. This innovative model caters specifically to ‘middle income’ households: those who are not eligible for social and affordable housing, but are priced out of homeownership in Australian cities, consequently suffering from the insecurity of the private rental market. Residents buy into the cooperative with a refundable membership fee to access long-term rent-stabilised housing and the ability to participate in the
management of their home.
