With the aim of developing our knowledge of autism, we will followup the development and adjustment of over 160 young children with autism or developmental delay. This will enable us to determine if any of the early developmental, communication and play impairment signs of autism predict the subsequent development of autism and the level of disability experienced by the child. We will examine the effect of early emotional and behavioural disturbance on the child's subsequent adjustment. Parental mental health and the ability to cope may modify the outcome and we plan to explore this possibility. We will need to demonstrate that the capacity of early signs to predict outcome is not simply a function of developmental delay.
