Conceptual Play: Foregrounding imagination and cognition during concept formation in early years science education

Project: Research

Project Details

Project Description

The international trend to increase the cognitive achievement of early childhood children is now a central
focus of governments in Australia. This goal has generated a need for better understanding how concept
formation occurs within play-based programs. Yet none of the theories of play were originally conceptualized
with this need in mind. The proposed study will investigate how cognition and imagination can work together
to support conceptual development in science for preschool aged children. These data are urgently needed
for the creation of a new theory of learning through play which leads to concept formation within the early
childhood years.
