Project Description

The National Underworld Programme: The Simulation Analysis and Modelling (SAM) Software infrastructure provides for modelling and simulation which underpins the AuScope infrastructure system. As the software is inherently complex, activity will include continual maintenance in response to deployment on new/updated high- performance systems, bugs or other deficiencies detected by users, changes to the operating system environment over time, and updates in 3rd party software libraries. The underworld software suite has benefitted from co-investment of approximately 1FTE for 2 years by the Basin Genesis ITR Hub (ARC funding) which build the UWGeodynamics jupyter/python front end for basin and lithosphere models. This cloud-focused front end was folded into the main codebase in 2018. Maintenance of these packages is defined as: bug fixing, platform support; relevant updates to and expansion of documentation / tutorials; user and application support via forums; and regular releases.

The Monash University component - Computational capability of SAM maintaining Underworld and associated ecosystems: Monash has world-leading expertise in the adoption of devops & cloud for research applications, hosting one of the Nectar Research Cloud nodes, and leading several national and global digital communities (e.g. Kubernetes, Research Data Cultures, etc). It also presently hosts computational (mixed computer, mathematical and geophysical domain) expertise, which when combined with the devops and cloud expertise, empower Underworld, SAM and Auscope to develop and operate advanced simulation, analytical & modelling capabilities for the community. These expertise are deployed to ensure the evolving infrastructure is research-led, and in particular by endeavours at the forefront of the geoscience domains.
