Community Centric Sport fixtures

Project: Research

Project Details

Project Description

RugbyWA contacted Monash University for help in creating fixtures for their youth competition. The fixture describes for each week what games are played, and for each game specifies which team plays “home” and which teams plays “away”. An objective that is currently not achieved in their manmade fixtures is the centralisation of clubs for the games played each week. Optimisation technologies developed by the Monash Optimisation Group can provide a solution to this problem.

The research requirement is to develop an algorithm to allocate all the teams in each club in each division to a place in a fixed schedule for that division that tries to optimise the centralisation of clubs. The schedule will ensure that each team plays at most one game per week, and that all teams within a division are paired up against each other. In cooperation with RugbyWA, Monash will develop a metric in the confines of optimisation technologies that estimates the centralisation of the clubs and will be used to create the best possible fixture to fit RugbyWA’s need.
